Maria Callas(1923-1977), Amerian/Greek soprano, born in US but moved back to Greece with her family, studied at the Athens Conservatory, made her professional debut in 1939 with Athens Royal Opera, and then joined the company, 1940-45. For the severl years she sang dramatic roles throughout Europe and US, taught at Juilliard 1973-74. She canceled her 1975 engagement and lived seclusion in a Paris apartment until striken by a heart attack.
